Choose a safari route before choosing a string of lodges. A Mara stay, an Amboseli visit and a Tsavo-to-coast journey are different trips. Combining every familiar park name can leave more time in transit than on the activities you booked.

This guide compares route choices. The Great Migration guide covers the seasonal herd question; a resident-wildlife safari should not be sold as a guaranteed migration crossing.

Compare the main route choices

Route focusUseful starting questionWhat needs its own confirmation
Mara reserve or TriangleAre you prioritizing a particular area or a broader wildlife stay?Camp location, entry route, game drives and applicable tickets
A private Mara conservancyWhich conservancy and activities are included?Access to the reserve and any additional fees for crossing visits
AmboseliIs the park the main stay or part of a longer southern route?Entry, accommodation, vehicle and onward connection
Tsavo and the coastDoes the quoted route end at your actual beach property?Which park sector, transfer route and coast arrival time

These are itinerary comparisons, not fixed driving schedules. Get the proposed route on a map with each overnight stop before paying a deposit.

The Mara: know which land your booking covers

The Mara Conservancy publishes Triangle-specific payment and ticket instructions, including the role of accommodation location and proof of visitor status. Do not assume a conservancy charge, reserve ticket and Triangle arrangement are interchangeable.

Ask the camp where its drives operate, whether a guide and vehicle are shared, and whether a planned trip into another area adds a charge. If a crossing is your priority, ask about current herd locations and realistic time at the river. The Conservancy's migration guidance says crossings are difficult to predict and instructs visitors not to block moving animals.

Amboseli: allow time for the park itself

The Kenya Wildlife Service Amboseli page describes its elephant-viewing appeal and access information. Pick accommodation with the actual park visit in mind, then ask the operator how the entry, drives and next transfer fit together.

Do not treat a scenic photograph as a promise of a clear mountain view or a particular wildlife encounter. Ask about the vehicle, guide, booked activities and weather-dependent changes. For a longer route involving Tsavo, confirm the exact sector and connection rather than accepting a generic “southern parks” label.

A coast extension needs a separate transfer plan

Before adding Diani, decide how and where the safari ends. A domestic flight, a rail connection and a road transfer can leave you at different arrival points. Our Diani guide compares the practical checks.

Leave enough room between the last park activity and a fixed departure. Ask what happens if the route changes and who arranges a replacement transfer. Keep the safari quote and the beach booking separate enough to see which provider owns each connection.

KWS directs visitors to KWSPay for its park-entry payments. County reserves and private conservancies have their own arrangements. Ask whether your operator pays on your behalf, then keep the relevant confirmations.

Entry documents and the safari booking

Organize the traveler names, overnight properties and dates consistently across the itinerary. The accommodation-evidence guide addresses the application-document question; it does not turn a tour invoice into an authorization.

Check the entry arrangement for your passport and the current eTA requirements separately. Your guide or lodge confirmation does not establish government approval.
